Air Freshener - Homemade Concoctions

If you love the smell of a clean, fresh home, then chances are you also enjoy making your own homemade air fresheners.

However, with indoor air quality becoming more important in today's society, we see many people turning away from commercial products, which contain harmful chemicals to natural products. The exciting aspect of this is that you can make your own homemade air fresheners, choosing the natural ingredients that best suit you.

In addition to the ingredients, one of the main differences between commercial and natural air fresheners is that commercial products only mask odor with another odor whereas natural air fresheners work by neutralizing and eliminating unwanted odors. Interestingly, many things to make homemade concoctions can be found simply by opening up your kitchen cabinets. While you can purchase natural essential oils, you can also use spices and herbs to include cloves, rosemary, ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, almond extract, and so on.

To use your homemade air freshener, you have a couple of great options. For instance, you can use a plastic spray bottle filled with three quarters distilled water and one quarter essential oils. To use, you would simply spray any time you want to clear a room of odors or enjoy the benefits of the aromatherapy. Another option is to dab essential oils onto a cotton ball and then place them around the home. In this case, you could put a cotton ball in a drawer, in a bowl of flowers, in a basket in the bathroom, or any place where you want a wonderful fragrance.

With so many different fragrances, you could mix and match in whatever way you like. If you want an immediate fragrance to flow through the house, you can use essential oil in a simmer pot. As the oil heats up, the beautiful aromatherapy will fill the air. If you do not have a simmer pot, then you can use an old saucepan but we recommend you dedicate one pan to homemade air fresheners, not using them for cooking food. Most importantly, get creative when it comes to making homemade air fresheners, trying various scents, and even mixing scents to come up with something unique.

To give you an idea of how you could create your own air freshener, consider the following recipe, which again could be mixed and added to distilled water in a spray bottle, soaked on cotton balls, or simmered on the stove.

1 1/2 cups warm distilled water

4 cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ginger

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil
